In New York City, 20,000 nurses are negotiating contracts with the city’s private sector hospitals. The hospitals are using federal Medicaid cuts as an argument for austerity. But nurses say the richer hospitals, and the state government, can fill the gap.

On July 4, 2025, President Donald Trump signed into law the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), the congressional budget bill that simultaneously exploded the federal budget deficit and slashed deep into the United States’ already-threadbare social safety net.
