This week’s Calgary mayoral election turned into a real nail-biter. Independent candidate Jeromy Farkas won with 91,071 votes, or 26.1 per cent, finishing slightly ahead of Communities First candidate Sonya Sharp with 90,488 votes and 26 per cent. The results are still unofficial and will likely lead to a recount.

One thing is for certain. Jyoti Gondek, the incumbent mayor who finished third with 71,402 votes (or 20.5 per cent), has been booted out of office. She’s the first Calgary mayor to not win a second consecutive term since Ross Alger in 1980.
