Nearly 1,000 rabbis and cantors from across the country — including a handful from Western Pennsylvania — have signed onto a letter voicing their concerns about “rising anti-Zionism” and the political normalization of it.

The letter was prompted by New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s comments shortly after last spring’s primary election where he defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

On a podcast shortly before the election, Mr. Mamdani wouldn’t condemn the use of the phrase “globalize the intifada,” which many see as a call for violence against Jewish people. Mr. Mamdani later said the phrase is “not the language I use” and in a July closed doors meeting with business leaders in New York City, he reiterated that he would not use the phrase.
