ALBANY, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- The state health department had news that was both bitter and sweet, much like the vapes about 13% of high schoolers in New York use, as the department's recent study found.
About 17% of New York high schoolers, the New York Tobacco Survey found according to a study released this month, smoked tobacco in any form last year. That includes the traditional cigarette, the archaic hookah, and the modern vape pen.
It's a number that state health commissioner Dr. James McDonald says is still too high, but a record low. The study measures every two years -- the number of teens smoking has gone down from 23.9% in 2022. Teen smoking had a bump in the late 2010s, as vaping rose in popularity, though since 2020, that trend has waned.
