TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A recent study by GoBankingRates broke down the cost of living in all 50 states to determine just how much the average American would need to save to afford 20 years of retirement.
To find out how much each state's comfortable retirement would require, GoBankingRates consulted sources such as the U.S. Census American Community Survey, the Missouri Economic and Research Information Center, and the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Expenditure Survey for Retired Consumer Units.
An additional 20% "buffer" was then added to the savings requirements, in order to craft a more comfortable retirement above the state-by-state cost of necessities.
The report then calculated how much you would need to save each month starting at age 30, for a comfortable 20-year retirement p
