DURAND, Ill. (WTVO) — The remains of World War II veteran Flight Officer Shirl P. Best, who was killed in battle, have been identified and are returning home for burial.
Best was aboard a bomber that was shot down over Germany on February 9, 1945. The plane, initially on course to crash into the city of Eisenburg with its bombs still armed, was diverted to nearby woods by Best and the crew, saving many lives.
The crash site was discovered in 1991, and after years of efforts, Best's remains have now been identified.
A funeral ceremony is planned for November 8 in Durand, where Best will be laid to rest in the Durand Township Cemetery.
