The Summit County Council may implement a new sales tax to fund $99 million of transportation infrastructure improvements in the Snyderville Basin as part of the county’s preparations for the 2034 Winter Olympics.
The state Legislature established the Impacted Communities Taxes Act in 2015 to provide funding to resort municipalities facing increased rates of infrastructure degradation because of substantial tourism in the area. Summit County staff, and Summit County Councilor Chris Robinson in particular, have since advocated for amendments to the law allowing the tax to be implemented at the county level as well.
State lawmakers agreed to the change earlier this year, and the implementation of the tax has now been brought before the County Council as part of the 2026 budgeting process.
