BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WBRC ) - Thursday marks day 23 of the government shutdown, and thousands of federal workers are going without paychecks as they continue to work.

Pamela Ward is a Social Security customer service representative in Birmingham. Since the shutdown started, she said morale has been down, but they are all doing their best to make it to work every day.

“It’s disheartening. They really want us to have empathy and compassion for the people that we serve every day, but it’s almost like they don’t have any empathy or compassion for us,” said Ward.

As the shutdown continues, Ward and thousands of others are not being paid, but are required to come to work as they are considered essential.
