RUMFORD, R.I. (WPRI) — As the government shutdown continues, fear is mounting that tens of thousands of Rhode Islanders will not receive food assistance in November.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is funded through the federal government, but administered at the state level by the R.I Department of Human Services. If the shutdown is still in effect on Monday, SNAP funding will come to a halt.
Community organizations across the state, including Feed RI's Hope Market, are preparing for an influx of people who need food for their families.
"Food insecurity is a leading cause of stress amongst folks that are our most vulnerable population. That includes kids as well," Feed RI Executive Director Johanna Corcoran told 12 News.
