BANGOR -- Penobscot county is in the midst of what public health officials are calling the largest HIV outbreak in the state's history. Bangor Public Health has launched a new program that aims to help those impacted by the outbreak.

Health officials say Penobscot county is the epicenter of Maine's most extensive HIV outbreak.

"I really do think that this is a wake up call for the state of Maine," said Jennifer Gunderman, Director of Bangor Public Health and Community Services.

According to the latest data from the Maine CDC, the number of confirmed cases has grown to 29 since October of 2023, far exceeding the average number of two cases per year.

"What is often true of many outbreaks is that the true number of outbreaks is potentially more than that," said Gunderman.
