HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. — Houston County is facing its deadliest year for domestic violence, with local officials confirming that 13 people have lost their lives to family violence in 2025. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office said it’s the highest number of domestic violence deaths ever recorded in the county.

For families touched by these tragedies, the numbers come with a deep sense of loss.

“As a mother, I don’t want her to be forgotten,” Tomeka Chaney said.

Chaney’s daughter, Michaela, was shot and killed in February 2024 by her ex-boyfriend.

A jury found Jayveon Bivins guilty of murdering 23-year-old Michaela . He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 20 years.
