The petition will require 16,006 signatures to oust Nicolaides

A recall petition for Minister of Education Demetrios Nicolaides, also MLA for Calgary-Bow, has been approved by Alberta’s Chief Electoral Officer, paving the way for his ousting following months of controversy between the province and teachers about the latter’s working conditions.

The petition was made by a Calgarian geophysicist named Jennifer Yeremiy, who also unsuccessfully ran as a candidate for the Alberta Party.

The ministry did not immediately respond to Postmedia’s request for comment.

The petition will require 16,006 signatures — 60 per cent of the votes cast in the riding in the most recent election — to oust Nicolaides.
