The Delhi government has notified changes in labour rules to allow women to work night shifts in all professional establishments other than liquor shops. The “consent of women shall be required before employing them in night shifts”, the notification says.
The notification, which was posted on the website of the Labour Department on October 17, follows a decision taken by the government in July, when the Labour Department was directed to make necessary changes to the Delhi Shops and Establishments Act, 1954.
The notification says that “no employee shall be employed or allowed to work for more than nine hours (including that of meal and rest) on any day and for not more than forty eight hours a week”.
