COLUMBUS— New legislation would regulate naturally-occurring kratom products while banning a synthetic version of the supplement, marking the latest effort to address what one Ohio state senator calls the “Wild West” of the kratom market.

Senate Bill 299 , sponsored by state Sen Louis Blessing would require sellers, distributors and manufacturers of kratom to register with the Ohio Department of Agriculture. The bill would also ban synthetic 7-hydroxymitragynine, known as 7-OH, limiting it to no more than one milligram in products.

“That’s really all this is,” Blessing said, “To, you know, bring some regulation to something that is right now, kind of the Wild West, right?”
