A quadraplegic man whose best friend stole his money, forcing him to sell his car and move into public housing, says the "betrayal and deceit" left him devastated.

"What Jonno did was not just about money, it was about betrayal, exploitation, lies and taking advantage of someone at the lowest point," the victim said.

"Never once did I think he would steal from me or take advantage of me."

On Friday, October 24, the victim's impact statement was read out in the ACT Supreme Court, detailing his despair at his friend's betrayal.

Jonathan James Maher stole $6400 from the victim during 2017-19, when he and the victim lived together.

Maher was previously found guilty of 28 charges of theft after a judge-alone trial in August. He was acquitted of a further 175 theft charges .
