When Thomas Emerson told his father he planned to go into politics as an independent, Craig - who was a senior minister in Julia Gillard's Labor government - thought, "this is going to be awkward." 

But on election night, as he sat inches away from the television watching the votes roll in, there was no question of where his loyalty lay.
