NEW YORK (WABC) -- New York State will put up the roughly $35 million in lost federal funding for Planned Parenthood, Governor Kathy Hochul announced on Thursday.

New York is the seventh and largest state to commit to fully filling the funding gap. Washington was the first, followed by Hawaii, New Mexico, Colorado, Massachusetts and New Jersey.

In a post on X Hochul said, "Trump and Washington Republicans defunded Planned Parenthood. I will not stand by while the basic health and wellbeing of New York women is at risk."

In July, President Donald Trump signed a one-year ban on state Medicaid payments to major nonprofits that offer abortions.

Since the passage of the law, Planned Parenthood clinics have been forced to choose between providing abortions and staying open.
