CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) - Several cats and dogs are safe after being rescued from inside a house fire in Cedar Rapids Thursday evening.
Firefighters responded to the home in the 300 block of 16th Street Northeast around 6:30 p.m. After arriving they helped rescue one person found trapped on the roof of the porch. Another person inside was able to safely escape on their own. Both were taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
Firefighters got the fire put out within 20 minutes of arriving. While inspecting the home, an animal control officer discovered several animals were inside. Two cats were found to have died in the fire, with other cats and dogs were rescued and reunited with their owners.
The cause for the fire is not yet known at this time.
