KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Hundreds of people from Hickman Mills and Ingels Elementary gathered at the corner of Food Lane and Longview Road in memory of Hazen Workman-Duffy.
Last Tuesday, she was crossing the street there around 7:15 a.m. when a van struck her. She wouldn’t recover from those injuries.
“It's just a time for us as a community to give our presence, not our words,” said Dennis Lester.
The family asked the pastor from Bethel Family Worship Center to lead the vigil.
“This is not something that a sermon can fix. It’s not something that cliches can do. It's just a time for us to come together as a community.”
People laughed, cried, and talked with each other, even releasing balloons in Hazen’s memory. Staff from Ingels Elementary wore shirts with her name on them, and her classmat
