At least 20 persons were killed after a bus caught fire following a collision in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district on Friday, the Hindustan Times reported.

Of the 41 persons on board, 21 were rescued, the newspaper quoted District Collector A Siri as saying.

Among the remaining 20, the bodies of 11 have been identified, Siri added.

The incident took place when the bus travelling on the Bengaluru-Hyderabad route collided with a bike near the Chinna Tekur village, NDTV quoted the police as saying.

“[The collision] probably caused a spark and led to fire,” Kurnool Superintendent of Police Vikrant Patil told the news channel. “Since it was an AC bus, passengers had to break open the windows. Whoever could break open the glass are safe.”

The fire was under control, the police said.
