E-bikes and e-scooters will have to slow down across New York City starting Friday, as transportation officials roll out a new 15-mile-per-hour speed limit.

The city’s Department of Transportation said the rule, which lowers the current legal range of 20 to 25 miles per hour, is designed to improve safety for both riders and pedestrians.

The limit applies across all five boroughs, including pathways inside city-operated parks.

Officials said the change follows a rise in complaints about near-misses and collisions involving the fast-growing fleet of electric micro-mobility devices on crowded streets and bike lanes.

The new cap also brings New York’s policy in line with international examples, including the European Union, where similar limits have long been in place.
