PHOENIX – Arizona State University’s SolarSPELL (Solar Powered Educational Learning Library) initiative works to bring solar-powered literary devices to rural communities around the world to increase education access.

The device was created by ASU professors and students and uses a Wi-Fi hotspot to provide thousands of educational resources to communities in Africa, the Pacific Islands and the Middle East.

Professor Heather Ross, who has worked with the SolarSPELL initiative in Arizona and Africa, told KTAR News 92.3 FM the device has provided doctors with the information they need to treat patients, students with the resources to learn and farmers with the databases to produce crops.
