During the 2023-24 offseason, the race to sign Shohei Ohtani came down to just two teams; the Dodgers and the Toronto Blue Jays. Amidst speculations that Ohtani had flown out to Toronto to meet with the front office, which turned out to be false, Ohtani announced on Instagram that he would sign with the Dodgers.

Now with the two teams meeting on Friday to begin the 2025 World Series, Blue Jays manager John Schneider jokingly stated that Ohtani should return the Blue Jays hat and jacket for his dog, Decoy, that he was offered during his meeting with them. Ohtani declined Schneider’s offer and countered by saying that the items were indeed gifts, per Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic.
