As a 30-something who just moved in with her boyfriend, I’ve been thinking a lot about shared finances lately. It was never a question of whether we’d split rent—hello, D.C. rent—but more a question of how.
Most of my partnered girlfriends (early 30s, city dwellers, working gals) have a similar arrangement to mine: Rent is split proportional to salaries, most other expenses are split 50/50, and the guy picks up more date nights. Their boyfriends are not paying for manicures or shopping sprees. And the women aren’t doing laundry or maintaining their joint social calendars. To me, this seems like a balanced, feminist approach to shared finances. We keep separate bank accounts, though. That feels like a step for married people.
