Alberta’s Minister of Municipal Affairs Dan Williams said he wants civic political parties to remain legal in future elections in Calgary and Edmonton.

This recent election cycle piloted parties in Alberta’s two largest cities for the first time in decades as a result of new provincial legislation .

“I'm open to feedback and we'll see what comes,” he told CBC Radio's on Wednesday. “But my purpose right now would be to continue this momentum in Calgary, let multiple cycles – as we've seen in other Canadian jurisdictions. Multiple electoral cycles in major cities with partisan parties has helped fulfil and fill out that process.”

Williams added he has no intention of expanding the political party system to municipalities outside of Edmonton and Calgary.
