OTTAWA — Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada was making progress on trade talks with the U.S. and that negotiators “stand ready” for the Americans to resume those discussions.

U.S. President Donald Trump abruptly ended trade talks late Thursday night over an Ontario ad campaign that features footage of former U.S. president Ronald Reagan saying tariffs are damaging to economies.

Standing on the tarmac at Ottawa’s airport this morning, Carney said that while Canada can’t control U.S. trade policy, it can work to build up the domestic economy.

Carney spoke just before jetting off to Asia to attend several international summits that Trump is also expected to attend.
