City, state and federal officials joined doctors and even a historian in Newark on Thursday to break ground on a long-awaited expansion and modernization of University Hospital , the state-owned trauma center that has loomed over Bergen Street since the 1970s, adjacent to its affiliated medical school.

Hosted by University Hospital Interim CEO Dr. Kaitlin Baston, the groundbreaking ceremony brimmed with pride as the seat of leading public healthcare and medical education institutions, including the hospital’s affiliate, New Jersey Medical School .
