A major gas leak in Old Montreal on Friday morning forced the evacuation of dozens of residents and the temporary closure of several nearby businesses.

According to the Montreal fire department, the incident occurred around 7:45 a.m. at the corner of Notre-Dame and Bonsecours streets, near City Hall.

As a safety precautions, power was cut off across a large section of the neighbourhood. Officials said that electricity is not expected to be restored the end of the day.

The SPVM told CityNews that they are also onsite to help secure the scene as more than 40 firefighters and Energir employees are on site to repair the leak.
