More than 100,000 poverty-stricken British children were sent to Canada by the British government between 1863 and 1948.

Their stories were remembered in Duncan Sept. 28 during British Home Child Day in Canada.

Duncan Mayor Michelle Staples and North Cowichan Mayor Rob Douglas joined others at Duncan United Church for a ceremony and speeches at a plaque on church grounds.

Bill Dennis, who donated the plaque in 2021, is the son of one of those home children who were placed with families in rural areas of the country.

“These children, many of whom endured hardship and separation, made lasting contributions to the fabric of our nation,” Dennis said while standing next to the plaque, which he contributed to the church in memory of his father and all the other British children who were sent
