Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday questioned why Western nations were “singling out India” over its energy trade with Russia, pointing out that European countries themselves were seeking exemptions from US sanctions on oil.
“I was reading in today’s paper, Germany is asking for an exemption from US sanctions on oil. The UK has already sorted and probably got an exemption. So then why single out India?” Goyal said during a discussion at the Berlin Global Dialogue, where he was speaking alongside UK Trade Minister Kemi Badenoch.
When Badenoch explained that the exemption pertained to a specific Rosneft subsidiary, Goyal shot back, “We also have a subsidiary in India of Rosneft.”
