A brief panic gripped Harvard University on Friday after reports of a possible shooting near Sherman Street, close to the Radcliffe Quad, led authorities to issue a shelter-in-place alert for students and staff.

The Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) issued the alert shortly after 11 a.m. (local time), urging everyone on campus to stay indoors.

By 11:48 a.m., the Cambridge Police Department said there was “no ongoing public safety risk at this time,” following which the university lifted the alert, according to The Harvard Crimson.

Cambridge Police said a second alert was sent about ten minutes later through the university’s MessageMe text and email system, followed by another update around 11:30 a.m. that indicated the suspect might have been heading toward Harvard Square.
