The Los Angeles Dodgers have taken a backseat in the World Series. Left-handed pitcher Alex Vesia has stepped away from the team to be with his wife, Kayla, as they face what the Dodgers called a “deeply personal family matter.”

The news hit just a day before Game 1 against the Toronto Blue Jays. The timing couldn’t be tougher, but the clubhouse’s focus quickly shifted from lineups to love and support. “It is with a heavy heart that we share that Alex Vesia is away from the team as he and his wife Kayla navigate a deeply personal family matter,” the Dodgers said in a statement on Thursday. “The entire Dodgers organization is sending our thoughts to the Vesia family, and we will provide an update at a later date.”

Neither Vesia nor Kayla has shared anything publicly since the announcement
