The first player born in Portugal to reach the major leagues since 1875 , right-hander Isaiah Campbell was a second-round draft pick of the Seattle Mariners in 2019, 76th overall, out of Arkansas . Now, after appearing in only 41 major league games, Campbell is facing the possibility that his career could be over, unless he can find a team to extend him another minor league contract.
Campbell was the 12th-ranked prospect in the Mariners' system by MLB Pipeline in 2020. He cracked Seattle's big league roster in 2023, appearing in 27 games with a solid 2.83 ERA over 28 2/3 innings. Campbell, working all in relief, fanned 33, but his 13 walks allowed must have been a red flag, because the Mariners traded Campbell to the Boston Red Sox after the season.
In Boston, things got rough.
