A magnitude 5.7 earthquake hit Japan's northernmost island of Hokkaido, according to a report by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) on Saturday. The quake occurred at a shallow depth of about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
There were no immediate reports of injuries, damage, or disruptions, while Japanese authorities confirmed no tsunami warnings had been issued. Officials said emergency teams are keeping a close watch on the situation, calling on residents to stay alert but calm.
Recent months have seen Hokkaido, a region known for seismic activity, experience several earthquakes. In June, a 5.7-magnitude quake struck off its coast, while in May, a stronger 6.1-magnitude tremor hit near Kushiro. - Ends
