Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would pause an anti-tariff advertising campaign featuring former President Ronald Reagan after President Donald Trump lashed out by halting trade negotiations with Canada.

The campaign, which Trump called "fake," featured portions of a five-minute speech of Reagan railing against tariffs and praising free trade.

"ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED," Trump ranted on Truth Social.

Hours later, Ford said that the advertisement would air throughout the weekend before being paused.

"Our intention was always to initiate a conversation about the kind of economy that Americans want to build and the impact of tariffs on workers and businesses," he said in a statement. "We've achieved our goal, having reached U.S. audiences at the highest levels. I've directed my team to keep putting our message in front of Americans over the weekend so that we can air our commercial during the first two World Series games."

"In speaking with Prime Minister Carney, Ontario will pause its U.S. advertising campaign effective Monday so that trade talks can resume," Ford added. "Let's work together to build Fortress Am-Can and make our two countries stronger, more prosperous and more secure."
