UPDATE: Former Tennessee State Representative Robin Smith has been sentenced to prison on Friday after pleading guilty to a federal fraud charge.

Smith had no comment as she entered federal court, accompanied by her husband and children.

She sat with three lawyers at her table inside as District Judge Eli Richardson explained the case and the factors he would be considering in determining her sentence.

Judge Richardson chastised her for the nature and circumstances of the case, and, noting her clean record and deep faith, called it a "head-scratcher" that this even happened.

Smith, who was tearful at times, admitted that she should not have committed a crime and acknowledged that she got caught up in the "theatrics of politics".
