FAIR HAVEN, Vt. (WCAX) - A new musical honoring 18th-century Vermont Congressman Matthew Lyon premieres this weekend in Fair Haven, the town he founded.

The musical, “Spit ’N Lyon,” tells the story of how Lyon battled with Federalists, even once brawling with Connecticut Congressman Roger Griswold on the floor of the U.S. House. He also became the first American to be found guilty of violating the Alien and Sedition Acts.

“His words are really powerful, and they strike a bullseye from 200 years ago. So, just hearing his words and getting to portray that and share that is pretty important to me,” said John Daly, who wrote and stars in the musical.

The musical premieres on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church in Fair Haven. Admission is free, but seating is limited.
