Hundreds of people were evacuated on Friday afternoon after part of a structure under demolition collapsed in Manchester’s city centre, sending scaffolding and debris tumbling into the River Irwell.

A video shared online showed the moment the building came down, with dust and debris filling the air as scaffolding plunged into the river below. The incident took place at Alberton House, a site already earmarked for demolition, when part of the structure suddenly gave way on Bridge Street.
