DOTHAN, Ala (WDHN) -- Geneva County Sheriff Tony Helms has announced he will not seek a fourth term in office.
Sheriff Helms made the announcement Friday afternoon.
Helms was first elected sheriff in 2015 and had served in multiple law enforcement roles within Geneva County, including with the Slocomb and Geneva police departments.
Helms joined the sheriff's office in the late 1980s and served in the Geneva County Drug Task Force.
"It has been my honor serving the people of Geneva County and the surrounding area. Over the last few weeks as I have discussed the idea of retirement, I have had an overwhelming response to stay in and I thank you, but it is time for God to lead me on a different path," Sheriff Helms said in his announcement letter.
