ATIKOKAN — The first phase of the Waasigan transmission line project from Shuniah to Atikokan is now slated to go live by the end of 2026, Hydro One says.

Sonny Karunakaran, Hydro One’s vice president of strategic projects and partnerships, told Dougall Media on Thursday that the overall project — which includes a second phase from Atikokan to Dryden — is still scheduled for completion by the end of 2027.

The first poles for the 230 kilovolt lines, designed to transmit 350 megawatts of power, went up in October.

“The requirement from the (Independent) Electricity System Operator was to try and bring it in as close to the end of 2025 as possible, and the overall project in by the end of 2027, which is what we're on track to do,” Karunakaran said.
