FORT MILL, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Families who rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in South Carolina could face a disruption in November if the federal government does not reach a funding agreement.

The South Carolina Department of Social Services (DSS) is urging residents to prepare and explore community resources that may help bridge the gap.

“The Department of Social Services here in South Carolina is trying to be proactive,” said Connelly-Anne Ragley, DSS chief external affairs officer.

In September, DSS loaded $103.8 million onto SNAP cards statewide. But because the funding comes entirely from the federal government, DSS officials say the shutdown in Washington could halt food assistance next month.
