Niagara Regional Police Service has sliced about $3 million from its proposed 2026 operating budget to reflect cheaper fuel prices and while delaying the hiring of staff by a few months.

However, at $236.9 million, it’s still about 11.5 per cent more than the NRP’s 2025 budget.

After police board members last week referred the budget back for additional cuts, Chief Bill Fordy said staff “went line-by-line through every program change that we had,” looking for opportunities to reduce costs “mindful of the significant impact we have at the (Niagara) Region, in our budget.”

Board members voted Thursday to support the revised budget, and present it to regional council for approval.
