Los Angeles County health officials on Friday confirmed the first local death of the year due to West Nile virus.

According to the county Department of Public Health, the patient was a San Fernando Valley resident who died of neurological illness caused by severe West Nile virus. No other details about the person were released.

“To the family and friends grieving the loss of a loved one due to West Nile virus, we extend our heartfelt condolences,” Dr. Muntu Davis, county health officers, said in a statement. “This tragic loss reminds us how dangerous mosquito-borne diseases like West Nile virus and dengue can be.
