AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas grocer HEB announced Friday afternoon that it would commit to donating $6 million to food insecurity relief in Central Texas.
The announcement comes during the ongoing government shutdown, which has seen federal workers turn to nonprofit food pantries for help and could soon see a pause in SNAP benefits.
Most of that donation, $5 million, will go into the Feeding Texas network. The remainder will be gifted to Meals on Wheels Texas.
Feeding Texas CEO Celia Cole said in the announcement that the donation is happening at a "critical moment," and called HEB "a committed partner in the fight against hunger."
