RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - Gov. Glenn Youngkin criticized state Democrats’ call for a special session on redistricting , calling it a “desperate grab for power” during an interview Friday.

The Republican governor said Democrats are trying to override a constitutional amendment passed by Virginia voters five years ago that established the current redistricting process.

“A constitutional amendment that was passed 65-35 in the Commonwealth, where we stood together and we said, this is the way we do this. And now they’re trying to override it?” Youngkin said.

Democrats currently hold six of Virginia’s 11 congressional seats, but hope to gain two or three more in 2026. They say the redistricting is necessary to counter similar moves in Republican-controlled states.
