After 200 years, the daughter of an American president is back home in Virginia.
Eliza Monroe Hay was the daughter of founding father and fifth U.S. President, James Monroe. Due to her mother’s ailing condition, Hay frequently fulfilled the duties of the first lady during Monroe’s two terms.

Leaving her family behind in Virginia, Hay died in Paris. Buried in an unmarked, unadorned grave, she never returned home.
“Basically Eliza was so obstinate, contrary and later in life had an argument with family and went off to Paris to live out the rest of her life and die there,” said retired teacher Barbara Vorndick.
Vorndick also volunteers as a history interpreter at James Monroe’s Highland near
Charlottesville.
