UNION COUNTY, S.C. (WSPA) - The Union County 911 Center has introduced a new Text-to-911 service to assist individuals in emergencies where speaking may not be possible.

The service, launched on Thursday, allows people to send text messages to 911 in situations such as domestic violence or active shooter incidents, where making a phone call could be dangerous.

"It's just another resource. Another tool in our pockets, in the citizens' pockets," said Christian Sims, Assistant Director of the Union County 911 Call Center.

The Text-to-911 feature enables users to send a text message to 911, which then pings cell towers to determine the sender's location. Operators can then begin communicating with the individual to assess the emergency.
