(The Hill) – Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) was scammed on Thursday by a group claiming to be a cleaning crew, according to authorities.
Multiple people claiming to be HVAC workers reportedly visited the delegate's home and managed to charge her credit card. The case is being investigated as felony fraud, local outlets reported.
Holmes Norton paid the individuals $4,362 in total even though no work was performed, according to a police report obtained by NBC Washington. A friend ultimately called the credit card company to have the charges cancelled.
In the report, police said they were told Holmes Norton is suffering from “early stages of dementia” and that the friend who called the police has the delegate's power of attorney.
