One of the biggest hospital and health systems in central Pennsylvania is stepping in to address the growing hunger crisis in the region set to be made worse by the federal government shutdown that has put food banks in jeopardy.

WellSpan Health on Friday announced it would contribute the equivalent of 1 million meals to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to meet the needs of millions of families affected by the federal government shutdown and the impact to food assistance programs.

Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding is set to run out in central Pennsylvania.
