The Madhya Pradesh government has banned the sale, purchase, and storage of “carbide guns” after more than 300 people, mostly children, suffered eye injuries during Diwali celebrations. At least 10 children have lost their eyesight, according to health officials.
What Happened
During Diwali, several children across Bhopal, Vidisha, Gwalior, and other districts used makeshift “carbide guns,” which caused explosions leading to serious injuries. These devices, also called “carbide pipe guns” or “desi firecracker guns,” became popular this year and were sold for around ₹ 150–200 in local markets and by roadside vendors.
